Thatch is the layer of debris, roots, and dead grass that collects over time between the soil and the blades of grass. Left on its own, it thickens into a mat, absorbing moisture that promotes diseases and pests. As long as this layer remains between 1 / 2 to 3 / 4 of an inch, it contributes to lawn health. Issues arise when thatch develops into a thicker layer and forms a wedge between the grass and soil. This can diminish lawn health.
This also prevents moisture from getting to where it’s needed most—the roots. Dethatching uses a specialized rake or machine, designed to slice the turf vertically and then rake it up. Removing thatch reinvigorates grass, and enables moisture to once again reach the roots.
Aeration and dethatching are two of the most overlooked, yet important, aspects of lawn care. The primary purpose of these services is to allow your lawn to breathe and better absorb nutrients, resulting in a thicker, greener and healthier lawn.
The best time to dethatch your lawn is dependent upon the type of grass your property contains. Warm seasons grasses are in their prime in late Spring, whereas cold season grass is dethatched in early Spring or Fall; proper timing is necessary so that grass can recover from the stress of the procedure.
Ricky’s Lawn & Landscape recognizes that every lawn needs specific types of care to add to its beauty and usability. We will always work diligently to provide you with a custom dethatching solution that is best for your lawn.
You can help manage thatch by creating conditions that accelerate decomposition, such as maintaining proper pH, avoiding excess nitrogen, top dressing and aerating. Once you have a deep thatch layer, your only practical alternative is to remove it with mechanical de-thatching equipment.
Because dethatching is needed infrequently, most homeowners do not own the specialized tools. Ricky’s Lawn and Landscape has the tools to dethatch and knowledge to determine if dethatching is needed. De-thatching equipment includes three basic types: vertical mowers, flexible-tine de-thatchers and multi-purpose de-thatchers.
