Aeration, Over Seeding & Power Seeding

Ricky’s Lawn & Landscape offers a variety of services to rejuvenate your lawn. Besides our outstanding Turf Fertilization Program, we also offer core aeration, over seeding, and power seeding.

Aeration, over seeding and power seeding are the cornerstones of any successful lawn care program. During aeration, we perforate the soil to allow moisture, oxygen, and nutrients to penetrate. Aeration reduces soil compaction, enhances thatch breakdown and improves water infiltration and soil composition. Most importantly, it makes a lawn less susceptible to damage from weeds, insects, drought, and disease. Aeration combined with over seeding improves turf density. We recommend aeration and over seeding once per season for all established lawns. Ricky’s Lawn & Landscape uses only top quality seed that is free of noxious weeds. All seed is not created equal, therefore it is imperative that only the very best quality seed is used.

What is aeration and how does it help?

Aeration is a means of punching holes into the lawn to enable nutrients, water, and oxygen to access the soil. Soil becomes naturally compacted over time, although heavy rains, foot traffic or parking will expedite compaction. Aeration loosens compacted soil, and incidentally helps dethatch in the process. For cool-season grasses in Northern Virginia and Maryland, fall is the best time for aeration. Following plug removal, the lawn receives a layer of organic matter, which leaches into the holes and improves the soil.

Power Seeding

When over seeding is simply not enough, we offer power seeding, which is a process of cutting rows into the soil and planting our high quality seed. Power seeding is an extremely effective method of filling in bare spots, and turning a spotty lawn into a lush, green carpet. Our power seeding machines are the same ones that are used on many local golf courses. If your lawn has bare areas and results are what you are looking for, power seeding is what you need.

Fall is typically the optimal time for aeration, over seeding and power seeding. However, we are capable of providing these services year round. Please call or email us for more information.
